Faith in something that exists beyond the surface of this material world. Something beyond the horizon, beyond the limits of the visible. Transcendence and reunion with oneself are two phases of being. The true artists of all times have been pilgrims on this path. Maxim Schalygin is one of them. He does not follow in the footsteps of his predecessors, but strives for the same goal”

Maxim Shalygin was born in Kamianske (Ukraine) in 1985. His compositional output covers the entire spectrum of vocal and instrumental music, from chamber music, symphonic and electro-acoustic works to theater, ballet and film music. As a composer, it is particularly important to him to bring the tonal characteristics of the instruments to full fruition by expanding traditional playing techniques. He therefore does not rely on academic formalism or avant-garde radicalism, but uses an unmistakably independent series of playing techniques formulated by him to realize new tonal ideas, while always remaining committed to tonality. Shalygin’s works have been performed by leading contemporary music ensembles including Asko|Schönberg, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, DoelenKwartet, Nieuw Ensemble, Slagwerk Den Haag, Amstel Quartet and Keuris Quartet. Maxim Shalygin currently lives and works in the Netherlands.

Youtube:

Svyatoslav Lunyov on Maxim Shalygin: “Spiritual search always requires a certain amount of faith.
