His work is marked by a spirit of innovation, thanks to which he enriched Ukrainian music with forms and genres that had not existed before. These include various types of operas, cantatas, multi-part semi-operatic choruses, dramatic monologues, and vocal cycles. They form the basis of the Ukrainian national opera art. Lysenko is considered the founder of Ukrainian music.
